FAMILY VACATION GUIDE

Scarborough Beach State Park: Family Vacation Guide

Scarborough Beach State Park is run by the state, not the town. It has its own entry rules, hours and seasonal notices, so plan it separately from Higgins, Pine Point and Ferry Beach.

AT A GLANCE

The quick answer

Best for: Families planning a beach-focused day who want to confirm the right Scarborough destination first.

Parking: Admission, passes and hours are published by the park operator; Scarborough's municipal beach passes do not cover this park.

Setting: A state park with its own operator, separate from the town-managed Higgins, Pine Point and Ferry beaches.

Plan around: Seasonal notices (at our October 21, 2026 check the park was on winter operations) and which beach entrance your rental actually serves.

Know which Scarborough beach you are visiting

Scarborough's municipal beach passes cover its town-operated beaches, not Scarborough Beach State Park. Use the park operator's current information when planning entry, fees and access. Do not assume a pass bought for another beach will work here.

For a family rental, ask which beach entrance the property actually serves. A listing in Scarborough can describe very different daily travel patterns.

Parking, admission and seasonal operations

The operator publishes day-admission, pass, hours and accessibility information on its own website. Check those pages before departure and follow gate notices. Build a backup plan if vehicle access or facilities are unavailable.

On October 25, 2026, the operator's winter notice listed day use as free from October 12 through March 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Beach Lot was closed, and the Booth Lot was open only with a pass (one car per pass). Restrooms, showers and food service were closed, lifeguards were off duty, and dogs were allowed from October 1 through March 31. That winter notice is not a summer 2027 schedule, so check the operator's live update for your visit.

Swimming and accessibility

Check the operator's beach-condition and accessibility pages, posted flags and staff guidance. A published tide time is not a swimming-safety assessment. Confirm any mobility equipment or assisted route directly rather than assuming that all seasonal services are operating.

The tide chart on this page uses the Pine Point NOAA station in Scarborough as a regional reference. Conditions at the park can differ.

Rental location tradeoffs

Map the route from the property to the actual park entrance, confirm included parking at the rental and budget for the admission arrangements that apply to your party. A short distance to the coast does not establish walk-in access.

Compare Higgins Beach for a cottage neighborhood or Pine Point for a Scarborough beach base on Saco Bay. Use our local rental resources as a starting point, then ask each company about its specific coverage.

Scarborough Beach State Park with toddlers and younger kids

Plan the return journey to the car, bathrooms and rental as carefully as the trip onto the beach. Confirm current facilities before deciding how long to stay.

Pack drinking water, dry clothes, layers and snacks rather than making the day depend on a concession being open.

Scarborough Beach State Park with teenagers

A beach-focused day can suit older children who enjoy time on the shoreline. Families wanting independent access to shops and amusements should compare a village beach such as Short Sands instead of assuming every beach setting offers the same activities.

Can you walk to restaurants from Scarborough Beach State Park?

This guide does not verify restaurants within walking distance of the park, so plan to bring food or drive, and do not make your day depend on a concession being open. To see what is open nearby, with current hours and reviews, use Google Maps: restaurants near Scarborough Beach State Park, and check the actual route before relying on a walk.

What families should know before booking Scarborough Beach State Park

2027 planning status. The park operator's website already links to 2027 season passes. That confirms a pass offering is advertised; it does not confirm all 2027 admission rates, hours, lifeguard coverage or facility dates. Check those separately before buying or booking.

Town passes do not apply. Scarborough's municipal beach passes cover its town-operated beaches, not this park.

Seasonal services vary. At our October 21, 2026 check the park showed winter operations, closed bathroom and shower facilities and off-duty lifeguards. Check the operator's live update for your visit.

A listing in Scarborough is not a beach entrance. Map the route from the rental to the actual park entrance and confirm included parking.
