Is Pine Point Beach good for a family vacation?

Pine Point is a strong choice for families who want a long sandy beach but do not need the amusement-and-boardwalk atmosphere of central Old Orchard Beach. The shoreline runs south toward OOB, giving families lots of room for walking and beach days while keeping a quieter Scarborough home base.

Scarborough's Hurd Park access at 63 King Street has seasonal restrooms, showers and a concession stand. For 2026, daily parking is $20 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pine Point has no lifeguards, so families should plan water supervision themselves.

The tide noticeably changes the amount of exposed sand. Use the tide planner to identify lower-water windows for long walks, sand play and a roomier setup.

For day-of logistics, use the Pine Point Beach parking map and the Southern Maine Tide Planner. If you're comparing nearby options, see the Old Orchard Beach guide.

Choosing where to stay

A rental close to the beach can reduce daily parking and gear hauling. Properties closer to the Pine Point neighborhood feel quieter; moving south toward Old Orchard Beach puts more restaurants and entertainment within reach.

Pine Point with toddlers and younger kids

The broad sand at lower tide gives younger children plenty of room to dig and play. Hurd Park's restrooms and showers make day trips easier, but there is no lifeguard.

For small children, a rental within a short walk can be particularly useful because the beach is long and carrying a wagon, cooler and tired child back to a distant car changes the experience quickly.

Pine Point with teenagers

Pine Point gives teens space for swimming, beach games and long shoreline walks, while Old Orchard Beach is close enough to add the Pier, Palace Playland and a busier evening when the family wants more activity.

That combination can work well for families who want quiet mornings and beach time without giving up access to a more energetic beach town.

Can you walk to restaurants from Pine Point Beach?

Pine Point has local seafood and casual food options around the neighborhood, but it is not a dense restaurant district. Where you stay matters: rentals near Pine Point Road and the harbor area have better access to local food, while other stretches are primarily residential.

For a much larger walkable selection, central Old Orchard Beach is the nearby alternative.

What families should know before booking Pine Point

No lifeguards are stationed at Pine Point. Plan direct supervision in the water.

The beach is long. A listing described as “Pine Point” may still be a meaningful walk from the access you expect to use, so map the route.

Parking is easier to avoid than to optimize. A walkable rental can eliminate repeated $20 day-parking trips and gear hauling.

Choose quiet versus entertainment intentionally. Pine Point is calmer than central OOB; families wanting nightly amusements may prefer to stay farther south.

Dog and wildlife rules are seasonal. Scarborough protects piping-plover areas, so check current signs close to travel.
