Is Wells Beach good for a family vacation?

Wells Beach works well for families who want a traditional sandy beach base with Ogunquit, Kennebunk and other Southern Maine destinations within easy driving distance. The beach sits on a narrow peninsula with the Webhannet River behind it, creating a distinct beach-neighborhood feel.

Wells has several public parking choices. In 2026, paid town beach lots charge $5 per hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wells Beach also has the free Casino Square lot. Overnight parking is prohibited in public beach lots. Lifeguards are daily from the last week of June through Labor Day, with weekend coverage on the shoulder portions of the season.

At low tide the beach becomes broad and flat, which is particularly useful for family beach setups and sand play.

For day-of logistics, use the Wells Beach parking map and the Southern Maine Tide Planner. If you're comparing nearby options, see the Ogunquit Beach guide.

Choosing where to stay

A rental on or near the peninsula can make beach access easy, but check the exact walking route and the property's parking. If your family plans frequent Ogunquit or Kennebunk outings, consider how often you are comfortable driving off the peninsula during busy summer periods.

Wells Beach with toddlers and younger kids

Lower tide exposes a broad, relatively flat stretch of sand that gives younger children lots of room for sand play. Seasonal lifeguard coverage is another family advantage during peak summer.

Choose a rental close enough to make naps and clothing changes easy, and note that Wells prohibits stopping at public rights-of-way simply to unload beachgoers and gear. Plan to walk from the rental or use designated parking properly.

Wells Beach with teenagers

Teens get a long beach for swimming, walking and active days, while Wells' location makes it easy to add Ogunquit Beach, York or the Kennebunks when everyone wants more than the beach.

Wells Beach itself is less concentrated around teen-oriented attractions than Old Orchard Beach or Short Sands, so families should expect some driving for entertainment and broader shopping.

Can you walk to restaurants from Wells Beach?

There are casual food options around Mile Road and the beach area, but Wells is spread out rather than organized around one dense pedestrian village. Walkability depends heavily on the rental's exact location.

For a wider restaurant selection, Route 1 and nearby Ogunquit provide many more choices, generally by car. When booking, map both the beach route and the nearest food options separately.

What families should know before booking Wells Beach

Parking has specific rules. Paid lots are $5 per hour in 2026, public lots prohibit overnight parking, and loading/unloading at beach rights-of-way is restricted.

Shade structures are restricted. Wells prohibits tents and pop-up shade structures on public beaches; check current umbrella rules before packing.

The peninsula can feel separate from Route 1. Beach access may be easy while groceries, restaurants and attractions still require driving.

Lifeguard coverage varies by season. Daily coverage is concentrated in peak summer.

Confirm rental parking and beach access. Those two details can matter more than a listing's general “Wells Beach” label.
