Gooch's is one of the three Kennebunk beaches along Beach Avenue, alongside Middle Beach and Mother's Beach. Many families choose one Beach Avenue base and decide beach by beach, so it helps to compare all three before booking. Our Kennebunk Beaches guide covers how they differ.
Kennebunk staffs its beaches with lifeguards from mid-June through early September. Beach parking permits are required June 15 through September 15; in 2026 non-resident permits are $30 per day, $100 per week or $200 for the season, available through the town's kiosks, the PassPortParking app and Town Hall. Confirm current permit options on the town's page before you travel.
Dog access changes by time of day in summer: from June 15 through Labor Day, dogs are allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Pet-owning families should review the town's current rules before booking.
If you want a playground beside the beach, Mother's Beach is the Kennebunk beach to compare. Families looking for a quieter, more beach-first Kennebunkport stay can also compare Goose Rocks Beach. For day-of logistics, use the Southern Maine Tide Planner.
The tide chart on this page uses the Kennebunkport NOAA station, the same one used for Mother's Beach, as a regional reference. Conditions at the beach itself can differ.
Choosing where to stay
For a Gooch's visit, prioritize an easy walk or short trip to Beach Avenue so permit costs do not add up each day. A walkable rental can remove the recurring daily-permit issue, but confirm the route and any included parking with the rental company.
Gooch's Beach with toddlers and younger kids
Kennebunk's summer lifeguards are a benefit for families with young children; follow posted flags and instructions and keep young swimmers within arm's reach. Because Beach Avenue connects the three beaches, families with toddlers often compare the playground at Mother's Beach before choosing a base.
Bring snacks, water and shade, and confirm current facilities with the town before your visit.
Gooch's Beach with teenagers
Gooch's works much like Mother's Beach, right around the corner: a sandy ocean beach for swimming and walking the connected Kennebunk shoreline, but not a beach built around teen entertainment. Teens looking for shops, food and something to do will want to head to Dock Square in Kennebunkport. Plan to drive younger teens there; older teens can likely make the trip on their own.
For a busier beach-town day, compare Old Orchard Beach.
Can you walk to restaurants from Gooch's Beach?
Beach Avenue is mostly a beach-and-residential setting, so most families drive to dinner. The broader dining choices are in Lower Village and Dock Square. To see what is open now, with current hours and reviews, use Google Maps: restaurants near Gooch's Beach or restaurants in Dock Square. The Kennebunk & Kennebunkport Chamber also keeps a Where to Eat page.
When comparing rentals, treat "walk to the beach" and "walk to restaurants" as two separate questions.
What families should know before booking Gooch's Beach
Parking permits are seasonal and visitor fees add up. Permits are required June 15–September 15, and 2026 non-resident permits are $30/day, $100/week or $200/season. A walkable rental can remove that recurring issue.
Compare all three Kennebunk beaches. Gooch's, Middle and Mother's share Beach Avenue but differ in setting and facilities; see the Kennebunk Beaches guide.
Summer lifeguards are a benefit. Lifeguards are staffed from mid-June through early September; follow posted flags and instructions.
Dog access changes by time of day in summer. From June 15 through Labor Day, dogs are allowed before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
